Earth-like exoplanets are one of the most interesting topics in modern astronomy. The latest discovery shows that scientists have succeeded in discovering a new planet outside our solar system that has characteristics similar to Earth. These planets lie within the habitable zone, where liquid water can exist, an essential condition for life as we know it. One prominent example is the planet TOI-700 d. This planet is located about 100 light years from Earth in the constellation Dorado. TOI-700 d is similar in size to Earth, with a radius about 1.1 times larger than Earth. This planet orbits a star that is smaller and cooler than our Sun, and is located in the habitable zone. These findings are expected to provide additional clues about the possible existence of life beyond Earth. Apart from TOI-700 d, other discoveries include the planet LHS 1140 b. Known as a super-Earth, LHS 1140 b has a mass about 6.6 times greater than Earth. Interestingly, the planet also lies within the habitable zone, allowing for the possibility of water. Researchers plan to use space-based telescopes to study the planet’s atmosphere and look for signs of gas that might indicate the presence of life. Technological advances have also played an important role in the discovery of Earth-like planets. Space telescopes such as TESS (Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite) and in the future, JWST (James Webb Space Telescope) allow scientists to detect small planets next to distant stars. The transit technique, in which scientists analyze the dip in light from a star as a planet passes in front of it, has become one of the main methods in the search for exoplanets. Besides the search for Earth-like planets, research has also focused on the properties of their atmospheres. The discovery of atmospheric spectra of planets such as K2-18 b, located 124 light years away, shows signs of the presence of water vapor. This sparked discussion about the planet’s potential to support microbial life. This discovery shows that the variability of planets outside our solar system is enormous and interesting. These planets also offer diversity in terms of composition and environment. For example, some planets have very different conditions, such as extreme temperatures or high radiation, but are still in the habitable category. This challenges our understanding of life and how life forms can adapt to harsh conditions. While scientists continue to explore the possibility of life beyond Earth, the discovery of an Earth-like planet gives us new hope in the search for remnants of life. Continued research into atmospheric composition, surface temperature, and other factors that influence habitability is critical to understanding the universality of life in the universe. Through collaborations between astronomers, astrophysicists and planetary scientists, we are on the verge of major discoveries that could change our view of our place in the universe.
